Music Scholarship

About the Scholarship

These scholarships are open to students with a passion for playing woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments who are looking to further their playing ability. The scholarships are open to students who are presently in grades 8-11 and who reside in New Jersey. Awards will be based upon a recommendation from their music educator (either public or private), an interview, and an audition. The scholarships will provide an honorarium that can be used to support the student’s musical development.  Examples include private study with an accomplished teacher or attendance at an established musical program such as an honors ensemble or a summer music program.
Two scholarships will be awarded:

Junior Division
Currently in grade 8 or 9
Scholarship award up to $500

Senior Division
Currently in grade 10 or 11
Scholarship award up to $1250

The recipient of the senior division scholarship will also perform with the Hanover Wind Symphony during our 2025-2026 season.

All candidates in grades 8—11 who wish to apply should provide the following:

  • Prepared solo of your choice (no accompaniment).
  • Recommendation of school or private music teacher, which speaks to your experience, musicianship, and dedication to music.
  • Music resume.
  • Essay on your enthusiasm for music in 200 words or less.
  • A description of how the scholarship award would be spent.

Note: Family of current HWS members are ineligible to apply. Previous scholarship winners cannot reapply for a scholarship in the same division they were awarded.

Application along with teacher recommendation should be submitted by February 15, 2025.

Auditions will be held in April 2025.

**Scholarship funds can be applied toward private lessons, honors music programs, summer music camps, or other musical activities once approved by the Hanover Wind Symphony Scholarship Committee.

Questions should be directed to Gail Lalk at glalk@verizon.net.
